How can I fix my system performance?

I have an IDE HDD with Windows XP SP3. I just bought another motherboard and another processor. I changed from: ASRock P4VM8/Pentium 4 to Intel MOBO/Intel Core 2 Duo. All my Linux OS installed are running really fast, but Windows is running extremely slow and it's getting weird. The USB optical mouse stops working and stays in a fixed position of the screen. The Realtek drivers are installed for Audio device, but my system is running without sound (Linux has pretty good sound). I wonder if there's an OS setting that its keeping my system %26quot;tied%26quot; to old MOBO/processor values. How can I fix this without reinstalling Windows XP OS?

You are probably luck the thing is running at all without reinstalling Windows. You really need to reinstall in order for Windows to get the proper drivers setup and then you need to install the chip set drivers and other support from the Intel CD that came with your motherboard. Good Luck

How to replace the motherboard on a computer that is running Windows XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824125
its slow cz when you first installed it the setup only loaded the thing to run the P4 run smooth and it didn't load the drivers to make the c2d run smooth so you have to reformat it
Well you HAVE TO reformat it. Or try at least an error fix by clicking properties on your windows drive and start error fix.

  • Help Upgrading my Computer?

hey guys, so first let me say a lot of thanks to whoever will take the time to help me out with this :-)

so the reason i wanna upgrade it is because i'm starting school soon, and i will study things that a good home computer will be necessary to run. i'll have to work with Avid express Pro, and edit videos, also alot of photoshop and probebly indesign. maybe after effects too, and titles. other than that i'm gonna probebly work with music editing/producing, but that's less important right now..

    so, here's what i have -

    processor: intel 2 duo E6400, 2.13ghz clock, 1066mhz side bus, s775 2MB(L2) cache

    motherboard: gigabyte 965P-DS4 s775 conroe, DDRii800, 2xpcie-e

    Ram: two - ddr11667 512 kingston

video card: sapphire X1650 pro 512mb DDRii, TV, DVI, PCI-E

hard drives: very nice WD 160gb, and external mybook WD 1000gb(with firewire)

that's the important things i guess. now, from my understing, i don't need a very good video card to work on editing, and i think what i have isn't bad and should be enough(am i right about it?) now since changing the processor is a big deal, i guess my best would be on getting better and more ram, the question is how much? and what kind?

anyways, so if you have the patience and kindness to help me out here i would really appriciate it, i know it's a long thread and all, but it's just that i vaguely have any clue about these stuff, so i figured nothing can be wrong in asking. so thanks in advance :-)

Since you will be using this for school work, and probably not gaming, you wouldn't get a Dual Core. Quad core provides the highest performance for multi-tasking, and running programs, dual core for gaming.

I would suggest for the CPU: Intel Quad Core 2.66GHZ Q9450. It is priced at around $300 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

If it is out of your budget, the next best thing would be to get a Intel Quad Core 2.4GHZ Q6600. This will cost you at around $180 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

    ----

That's CPU out of the way, since you will be using quite a few programs, of course you will need some more RAM.

I suggest a Kingston 2GB DDR2 (2x1GB). 2GB should be enough, and you can also use your 2x 512MB RAM Sticks along with the 2GB RAM as well if you have enough PCI slots.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

    ---

I have also checked if your motherboard is compatible with the hardware I have stated above, and it is. The Video Card seems decent, since you won't be doing much gaming or 3D rendering.

You have enough Hard Drive space, thanks to your external hard drive. Tip: Don't store data that you will use often on your external, external hard drive has slower read/write speed so it will take longer to read/write files and applications. So store the data you use most on your internal, and the data which is not viewed or used often on your external.

For the CPU and RAM upgrade, it will only cost you around $400. (Newegg prices).

Note: Newegg is for USA only.

I hope I have helped. Good luck with schooling!

Some useful sites you can look at on how to install RAM and CPU. Might come in handy when you decide to upgrade.

    (RAM)

    http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/step-1-mater鈥?/a>

    (CPU)

The installation manual will probably provide the best instructions, so when buying the part, and your about to install, a good flick through the installation manual is a good idea. If it doesn't give you enough information about installing, look at the sites. Last thing if none of the sites help, post up on here again.

    take it 2 da shop
Depending on your operating system, you should take perhaps 4 GB RAM.
i would go for 2 gig of ram

    Hi,

If I were you,I would just upgrade my RAM to 3-4GB(XP wont detect the entire 4GB).After looking at configuration,I dont think anything else needs to be upgraded. In case you are consider changing the video card,it will be better after you start working with the applications that you mentioned and if it shows any issues.

How do I build a good budget gaming computer?

I plan to build a gaming computer for the first time but I don't know where to start. My budget will be about $1200 and I really want to get the best bang for my buck, with good upgradability and able to play the latest games with relative ease. I was think about getting an i7 processor but when I looked on wikipedia (Generally not the best place for information, I know.) it listed a few different versions of the exact same processor, but released at different times. Is that kind of like what they did with the XBox 360 where they changed the processor around slightly on the newer models but it's still basically the same? I'm getting off track now but the basic question is what should I look for without breaking the bank?
How do I build a good budget gaming computer?
    Check out http://www.gamingbuilds.com/

There is an awesome picture guide on the homepage if you are a beginner. It shows exactly how to build a computer, step by step. Highly recommended.

The website also offers computer build ideas, which sounds like it would come in handy for you. Honestly, the processor will not make that much of a difference on a gaming build. I would check out the $700 build on that website and just choose a more expensive video card if you want to spend more.
How do I build a good budget gaming computer?
Case-wise, I'd suggest the Antec 1200. Plenty of space for everything you'd want to put in there. Harddrive suggestion: Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5%26quot; Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive I have two running in Raid 0 and my comp is running very quickly.
You should probably read some reviews for the components you are considering using, and look for sites that provide clear and unbiased reviews. You could google for things like %26quot;i7 processor reviews%26quot;, %26quot;i7motherboard reviews%26quot;, etc.

THe overclockers sites and their forums are usually a good source for reviews because they want the best parts to overclock the hell out of and still remain stable and don't cost a lot.

Here are a few links. There are many more.

If you go to the intel site you can find lot of info about the i7 cpu and how the various releases are different. It is worth browsing the site.

    Good luck

Computer Problem Part 4 - Almost worked!?

Ok, so here's where I have left off from.

I had a computer problem only a few days ago, and I (well, the Yahoo! Community did...) solved the problem by changing the PSU. I had a 450W in, but I replaced it with a 250W and Kapow! it fires into life!

I managed to reformat the HDD I had in (80GB) and after installation, put in a 200GB HDD as a slave. It worked fine, and I started installing all my old programs and stuff, chuffed that I have my old desktop back working.

I turn it off at 2am, and once I got back from work at 12.15pm the following day, I pushed the power button and nothing happened. I couldn't believe it!

I thought that the PSU had blown, so I went and replaced it with a 230W PSU... but nothing has happened. I know its not the PSU because there is a green light that glows when power is getting to it, and come on, it was working yesterday! And I know its not the actual power switch, because I thought it was that yesterday, but I changed it and it never solved the problem, so when I changed the PSU and put the old one back in, it turned on. Its a new Graphics card (less powerful, but now the graphics actually work...) that's in it, a new P4 2.4Ghz CPU, new Abit BE7 motherboard, a formatted HDD and a now formatted slave HDD. This is the 3rd PSU I have put in it, but as you can tell I don't think there was anything wrong with the old PSU... I just can't put my finger on what has went wrong, as nobody has touched this presumably fine working PC.

Please note that I have scrapped the 450W as it was the problem before. I still have the 250W and I currently have the 230W installed. I have tried turning it off and disconnecting from the power source for a while.

    UPDATE

I have taken the advice from part 2 of this problem that the Yahoo! Community have given me, and instead of going down in power, I have went up to 400W power supply, as I went on a website and it says that my computer needs 271W of power. I borrowed a 400W PSU and threw it in. Result? Still doesn't work.

I went and changed the CPU from a Pentium 4 2.4GHz processor to an Intel Celeron 2.4GHz processor thinking that possibly the processor has fried... which I doubt because it was working fine one night, 10 hours later when off it doesn't!!!

Does anyone know whats went wrong here? I don't think its PSU problems, I dont think there's Processor problems. Im getting really frustrated and just want this god damn thing to work! Someone once suggested that maybe my power surge has blown it up, which got me thinking, because when I got a power cut a few times, the comp stopped working ,and what I used to do was disconnect the power for 20 mins and reconnect, and it would work. But the thing is, there was no power cut. I know this because I would have had to reset my alarm which I hate doing, and I never had to.

The person who gives me the correct answer that sorts it gets a thumbs up and 10 points.

    Thank you!

    %26gt;%26gt; UPDATE %26gt;%26gt;

I have rebuilt this computer 3 times today in the hope that it would work. I have changed the Processor to an Intel Celeron (one I seen working) thinking it was the processor, and was starting to get frustrated and started looking at new motherboards on eBay to help solve this problem. I then started looking at the pins that operate the power switches and went on the manual to look and see if they were on the right way. According to a guide on-line, the coloured one indicates a positive, and the black/white one is a negative. Anyway, I clicked a few pages ahead on the Adobe manual and seen how to clear the CMOS, and I thought %26quot;hey, the comps not coming on, but I'll check anyway%26quot; and low and behold, I think I have found the problem!

The original jumper that was located there was missing. the CMOS wasn't being activated! So I ran to my friends house and basically tore their spare AMD computer and took a jumper from it. I went home and fitted it onto the CMOS and the %26quot;vvVVV...%26quot; of the fans kick in, the LED's light up... I thought %26quot;oh YES!!!%26quot; and then %26quot;VVVvv...%26quot; shut down. I try again and the same happens. I get about one second of activation and then it dies. But at least I knew it wasn't a power issue! My guess is I must have knocked it out when I put in the new graphics card.

Does anyone know what I should do to get it running... say... a good few years? Does anyone know if a CMOS jumper is different from a HDD jumper? I wouldn't imagine it was, but if it is, then I don't know what to do. Or is it the new Processor I put in that's causing the shut down?

Anyone with the correct answer and allows this machine to run gets 10 points!
Computer Problem Part 4 - Almost worked!?
    sigh....

im guessing it's one of your software thats screwing the computer up...

    try reusing the 450 psu

    and this time

put ur comp and stand -by or hibernate if it survives

    ------------------------------

unless you actually wiped the HD again and used the same parts as it came from your %26quot;original build%26quot;(if you cant use the original build try finding differnt parts)

    ------------------------------

    it COULD be your MotherBoard
Computer Problem Part 4 - Almost worked!?
I have seen this happen when (believe it or not) the CMOS battery dies. Only certain machines WON'T POST without a battery (or a dead one) but it DOES happen.

The jumper does not differentiate between HDD and Motherboard jumpers, they are all the same. The new proc COULD be a culprit as well, if the procs are bad, fans may power up, lights may light, but it won't post. Try swapping the CPU out, but check that CMOS battery first.

How do you upgrade a processor in vista.?

I mean how do you actually change it. I have the processor I want, but I don't know exactly how to change it. Do I just take out the old one and plug the other one in? Or is it not as simple as that?

In thory it is as simple as taking out hte old one n pluggin in the new one.

just make sure its the right type, and you plug it in teh right way ( I know hter ekinks in the Intel CPU's so it shoudl be hard to stick it in teh wrong way. rmeber to stick on some themral grease too.

How do you upgrade a processor in vista.?
You must close computer, open case, remove processor heatsink, unplug old processor, plug new processor, remove old thermal compound from heatsink, apply thermal compound (to processor not heatsink) and put heatsink back.

I guess you don't have thermal compound in home. Buy arctic mx2 from computer store.

    Changing voltage on processor??

I currently have a AMD Dual Core 5600+ 64 X2 Socket AM2 processor. The normal clock is 2.6GHZ. I was able to overclock it to 3.00GHZ just by changing the FSB. but it is unstable if I go any higher, but the chip still remains below 50C so I was wondering how I would increase to voltage to the chip in order to push it even further (since I heard that helps stability at higher clocks) but my motherboard is a MSI K9N I believe, but I have 2 computers I am trying to overclock, but none of the motherboards have the option to increase to processor's voltage, I can only increase the voltage of the RAM on one of the motherboards. can anybody help tell me how I might get a aftermarket bios or a freeware program for windows so I can raise the voltage much higher? I tried a AMD clock program but would not let me increase the voltage anymore than .5Vs higher than what it was already set at.

Please help me! I want to break my overclocking record with this dual core chip lol, ive never got 3.2GHZ+
    Changing voltage on processor??
update the bios on the boards, or get a proper overclocking board from gigabyte.
    Changing voltage on processor??
DUDE?! You raised the voltage by .5v?! That's almost a 50% increase in voltage! That's WAY too much. Usually you want to raise it by .01-.02v at a time until it's stable.

What are you trying to do? Fry the CPU?
Hey, if you are unable to change the core voltage in your BIOS, try updating your BIOS from the manfacturers website, this may solve your problem, if not, you will have to replace your board with another one capable of a good overclocking ability, able to change v cores, frequency, ram timing etc. hope this helps.
Too much voltage can damage a component but the right amount can help stability. In regards to your processor, raising the voltage with overclocking will bring stability but can also raise temps. I typically recommend not going over 1.45volts with air cooling setups. High voltages over time can cause electromigration but we're talking like 1.5-1.6+ volts 24/7.

Just make your best judgment and when you start to see the temperatures rise, drop the voltages and keep testing.
No more man! youre right on your way to frying your processor.

How can I slow down or control the processor speed on my lap top?

I Know most people are trying to find ways to speed their computer up but not me. I Have a P4 processor 3.2 GHZ installed within my laptop (dont ask me why) but the result is my laptop overheats so quickly I can not use it long enough to do what I want.

I read somewhere that you could change the settings of your processor so it runs at a lower speed. Any one know how this is or can be done?
How can I slow down or control the processor speed on my lap top?
I don't think you can slow down the processor speed enough to get it to run cooler. Why is your processor running so hot? You should keep the fans clear of everything, IE. don't put your laptop on a bed or surrounded by blankets.. this will get the laptop some room to disperse the heat and won't freeze up or crash.

You get special stands with fans on them where you can put the laptop on .. and they will help cool the thing down.

If nothing helps, take it back to the store and ask them to look at it. You might need more heat conductor gel or have them put the cpu heatsink back on it properly.
How can I slow down or control the processor speed on my lap top?
Sounds like you have a desktop chip in there ;) I'd swing by the BIOS when it starts up and see if you can lower the Front-side Bus to CPU multiplier.
You might have room for manouevre with Notebook Hardware Control (requires .netframework 2.0)

    http://www.pbus-167.com/nhc/nhc.htm#anch鈥?/a>
I cant speak for other laptops, but on my Toshiba, I have a Toshiba Power Saver application which lets me control lots of settings for power management, and one of them is the processor speed - I can choose from level 1 to 4 and also choose the cooling method (eg min, medium max).

If you dont have a toshiba, this is probably not much use to you.
as people like to overclock their p.c,s and laptops ,their is a few users who underclock their computers, and the main reason is the same as yours, overheating

however ,your laptop shouldnt be overheating like it does, laptops are designed to be able to cope with the high clock speeds that the pentium 4 uses,so if it is still under warranty i would send it to be looked at as it sounds like a fan in the laptop is malfunctioning, and this is what is making the laptop so hot when used

if it were a tower, you could easily add extra ventelation, such as a rear chassis fan which only costs 拢8 but a laptop is a bit more difficult, that is why i recommend proffesinal advice

however ,for a short term fix,why not go into power options in control panel, and see if you can change any settings to ease the laptops resources, also it may not be your processor,it could be a overheating battery,to check if its your processor just press ctrl+alt+delete and when the windows task manager appears look at the processor usage at the bottom, and leave it on it for a while,if your laptop gets warmer, and the usage stays around 3% it isnt your processor,it must be your battery or even your graphic chip(or a defective fan)

either way, like i said, you should seek professinal advice,do not try and underclock(slow down) your processor,as any messing with your processor(overclocking or underclocking)is dangerous when you dont fully understand what you are doing,it can ruin your processor for good

however if you feel brave enough to do the job your self, its a case of going into bios(setup) press delete on start up ,and in set up look for power management or a similar named item and then its a case of lowering the clock speed bit by bit,do not lower it in one big amount, clock speeds are made up of 2 things, front service bus(fsb) and multiplyer, multilply thee two together and you get your clock speed

    for example fsb 200mhz.....multiplyer 13.5 x

    clock speed.....2.9 ghz

some times you lower using the multiplier but sometimes these are hard locked to stop overclocking ,and you can only use the fsb, then it is best to raise or lower these by the smallest possible frequency each time..allways save and exit each entry ,but be carefull overclocking can damage the processor and underclocking, well i dont know anyone who,s done this,so its a rough guess that i wouldnt lower it more than 400mhz taking it down to 2.8ghz

the rule of thumb is safe overclocking is normally 10 to 20% of the clock speed so if you apply that when underclocking you should be safe, that means you can underclock between 320 to 640 mhz but i would go for 400mhz lower

    any probs let me know

    good luck
Computer might over heat when the fan gets blocked with dust and hair. Clean it out. It helped in my case.

Processor must be in touch with heat sink. There must be enough heat conducting gel between the two.

How can i change video drivers in a dell inspiron E1405??

I play this game called second life and up until the other day it was working fine. Suddenly it stopped working, i emailed the company nd they said that my video driver doesnt support it. When i tried downloading the software they recommend, it gets to the install wizard thing and says that the software i currently have on my laptop is not the right configuration then closes on me. Am i going to have to buy a new video card?? Do they cost alot?? Right now im running an Intel video processor and need to change it to either nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better or ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better.

    Any help would be great.

unfortunately u cannot upgraded the graphics cards in laptops. so yea there is nothing rly u can do
How can i change video drivers in a dell inspiron E1405??
Determine what your video card is, and get the most up to date drivers for it.

You may or may not be able to upgrade the video card in your dell laptop - but the one in it can probably handle the game with no problem (it was up until recently anyway). They may have made a change in the game programming that requires something your video driver can't handle. Get the most up to date one, and if the game requires direct X, get the newest version of it as well.
It sounds like you just have a broken driver to me too so i would go to dell and look in their technical support on downloading a new driver. they are free there so try that first

How do i change the speed of my dual core AMD processor?

I have a Turion 64 X2 processor (TL-58) and its supposed to be running at 1.9ghz but my computer says its only running at 768 mhz, where can i change it to be at full speed all the time. I couldnt find it anywhere in power management or anything like that
How do i change the speed of my dual core AMD processor?
That is odd that it is not running at its labeled speed. I would check your BIOS settings to see if your computer is limiting it for some reason.
How do i change the speed of my dual core AMD processor?
Uncheck 'Cool n Quiet' feature in CMOS BIOS.

How does the Ghz for a computer processor affect the computer's speed?

Basically, I'm asking how much of a computer's speed relies on the Ghz of the processor? Also, how does that change with different types of processors? To what extent would you take into consideration the Ghz of the processor when purchasing a computer?
How does the Ghz for a computer processor affect the computer's speed?
The more Ghz the better. When buying a computer you should always get the one with the faster processor, but you have to look at other specs too - how much ram a pc has can also affect its speed - the more the better, what kind of video card it has and other things like that. Don't worry about real fast processors unless your into gaming and 2.0 - 2.4 intel or amd will do the job if your into regular everyday web surfing and emailing, but if your a gamer go for 2.4 or faster dual core processor

Do u have any idea how to use IDE Harddisk in a SATA port?

I upgraded my computer to Pentium Core 2 Duo. In doing so, i had to change my processor, mother board, Ram, Casing and AGP card. I have connected my one old IDE Harddisk as primary and one old IDE DVD drive as Slave to the only IDE port in the new mother board. But my other IDE Harddisk and CD Writer is useless unless I can connect those to the motherboard. Do u know of any kind of convertor / cable that connects the IDE drives to the new SATA ports of the motherboard. Or any other idea??
Do u have any idea how to use IDE Harddisk in a SATA port?
    use IDE to SATA connector,,,,,,,

or just plug the IDE hard disk to CD rom FRC cable
Do u have any idea how to use IDE Harddisk in a SATA port?
Yes there is converter.to SATA TO PATA or PATA TO SATA

    http://www.cooldrives.com/sata-to-ide.ht鈥?/a>
dear plz u use the sata-pata connector ...
I had the same problem as I was having multiple hard disks and removable drives.

Since the converters were costly I just went ahead and bought an external storage case for my secondary hard disk which worked out fine.
Another idea is to install a pci card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

About my notebook, can I upgrade it?

My parents bought me an Acer 4920 more than half a year ago for computing in school while I'm away from home.. I'm not really into computers so I want to ask for some advice.

The specs according to the label:

    - Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 (1.83 GHz 667 MHz FSB 2 MB L2 Cache)

    - Up to 252 MB Mobile Intel Graphics Accelerator X3100 (i think it came integrated with the Intel Mobile Chipset 965)

    - 1 GB DDR2

Do you think I can upgrade my RAM and up to how much? Can upgrade my RAM to 3GB or it should only be 2GB/4GB? What I mean is can I use RAM with 1GB + 2GB combination?

Can I also change my processor as well as my graphics driver? Up to what extent can I upgrade those hardware? Sorry for the complicated question.. Thank you and good day..
About my notebook, can I upgrade it?
The only hardware you can upgrade is the RAM. To find out what kind you need, and how much you can install, go to Crucial's web site and run their memory scanner. It will give you a very complete report on your RAM. You can take the info and shop around, or you can just buy what they recommend. Crucial is very good quality.

    http://www.crucial.com
About my notebook, can I upgrade it?
Hard to tell as you haven't given much info.

Run a test at Crucial RAM testing (Google it) and see what they say!

Don't get 4gb of RAM, your computer will only read about 3.2 or so of it.

It would be very costly to change the processor, better off saving for a new laptop!

If you're patient, quad core will be standard soon, and dual core laptops will drop in price dramatically!

I want to upgrade my netbooks overall performance.?

I was hoping somebody could help me out, I wanted to buy a 4 gig of ram to speed it up but I'm not sure if I should change the processor as well. I was also hoping if anyone out there knew how far I can take this net book of mine. As for specs on my net book it is a Asus Eee PC T91MT with a Intel (R) Atom (TM) CPU Z520 @ 1.33 ghz and 1 gig of RAM and a multi-touch feature with the tablet PC feature so its no ordinary net book. It only has 32 Gigs of space Running on Windows 7 on a 32-bit Operating system. I was hoping someone could tell me if any of these could be upgraded to a better faster part to be replaced with and if there's anything else I should upgrade. I would do it myself but I'm not to familiar with the limitations of net books, sorry for the long question and I thank you for taking the time in answering me. I usually use Newegg.com to buy all my electronics so if what I need is there it would be much appreciated thank you all.
I want to upgrade my netbooks overall performance.?
    1) You can't upgrade the processor. It's an Atom.

    2) I'm pretty sure 2GBs of RAM is the max.

If you want a fast computer, then you shouldn't be using a netbook. Netbooks aren't made for performance, only portability.
I want to upgrade my netbooks overall performance.?
for what it would cost you tom upgrade it you could buy a decent laptop

None of your links work. But if its a cheap build your wanting then buying a dell or hp would be the best. You only benefit building your own computer once you get into the $1000+ price range. Buying a $500 computer from dell or hp gets you the OS and sometimes a monitor which you couldn't do building your own.

Can I upgrade my Toshiba Satellite a215-s4747 CPU, Graphics, and RAM?

I would like a new processor, more ram and a better graphics card in my Toshiba Satellite a215-s4747. I have a AMD Turion 64 X2 1.80ghz and would like it to be around 3.0 ghz. I have 1.0 gb of ram and would like to double it. And I have a ATI Radeon X1200 graphics and would like to upgrade that as well. I am wondering how I go about this. Can I change my processor to something faster? Would it just be easier to buy a new laptop, though I am short on money so I thought this would be cheaper if I can do it.
Can I upgrade my Toshiba Satellite a215-s4747 CPU, Graphics, and RAM?
in that laptop, only the ram, hdd and cpu can be changed. getting a faster cpu will be very hard if not impossible. in order to change out the videocards you'll need a laptop that has mxm on it. faster clock speeds dont always mean faster performance. ie: 3.0GHz P4 vs. 2.0GHz Core2Duo. c2d comes out on top.

mxm is a really confusing standard(if you can call it that) here's a link to an asus that will smoke almost anything you'll see on store shelves.

you can't really change anything is a laptop, except for the ram

better of with buy a new laptop.

If you really want a very fast computer, then go for desktop. because everything is a desktop is easy to replace and modify.

    MY FRIENDS COMPUTER QUESTION?

my friend got his computer in 2006 and it came with a p4 in it. his mobo has an LGA 775 socket and it has 4 slots for ram. my question is (if it is possible) would he be able to change his processor? and how would the ram work cuz the p4 takes ddr5 ram and most processors now take ddr2. so how would this work? and what would be the max amount of ram he could put? (i was told around 4 gbs cuz the slots on his pc could only tolerate 1 gb per slot) thanks

mail me if u have any questions or if u dont understand something
    MY FRIENDS COMPUTER QUESTION?
You will have to look up the motherboards requirements from the manufacturer. You SHOULD be able to upgrade the processor, but you may not be able to put something like a quad-core in it. Same thing will the RAM check with the manufacturer.

    Question for changeing my cpu?

Hi I have a question, I would like to change my processor but do not know how to find a solution to socket, watching CPU-Z is that the socket AM2 (940), and the question lies the fact that if I can be there to support AM2 processors, such as like this: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 + AM2 Box

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 + AM2 Box 2,8 GHz 1MB ADA5600DOBOX 65W

Sorry for my bad English :D
    Question for changeing my cpu?
    OK

    Yeah. AM2 is the same.

    You can change it.

And AM2+ will also work on the same socket if you want to change.
    Question for changeing my cpu?
It all depends on your motherboard. CPU-Z isn't always correct. If you new the make and model of the motherboard it would be much easier to tell you what is compatible or not. If this pc a custom build or store bought? If it is a namebrand pc like dell, HP, Gateway, Sony, or one like that, if you could give model number and/or serial, I could look up the specs and give you a much better answer but I would hate to tell you yes that processor will work great just by going by what CPU-Z said the socket was and then it not work or even worse it fits the socket but not compatible and you fry your board or new processor...or both!
consult hardware engineer. he wil solve ur problem exactly. dont do mistakes wit these answers.ok

Hello Everyone! I'm a HUGE computer geek, and a true Sims 2 + 3 junkie. I like running multiple applications at once: itunes, firefox, Adobe flash, Illustrator, Netflix, Sims 2 Bodyshop, etc and or Sims 2, Sims 3, firefox.. blah blah blah you get my drift. Hands down I'm impatient and I feel that my 2G of RAM is not enough at all for my selfish needs. It runs the Sims 2 + 3 smoothly- but the loading screens take forever. I have 13+GB's of download in my Sims 2 folder. They are all compressed and I'm hoping upgrading to 6GB's of RAM will speed things up a bit. Plus when running Lightwave, Flah, and Illustrator, etc Heavy CPU applications at once they randomly crawl. Now that I have the money I'm ready for change!

    My processor is: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU ES5200 @ 2.50GHz (2 CPU's)

    2.00 GBs of RAM

    1,300+GBs of HardDisk memory

    Windows XP PRO Spack 3

The RAM sticks I'm debating on buying are exact matches of my DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) CL5 240pin sticks. I'm getting 4GB (Two 2GB module sticks)

My question is: Will adding to my RAM enhance my computers performance? What's your opinions, save my money- or go for it?

Please: DON'T explain to me how to %26quot;clean up%26quot; my downloads folder - it IS clean, just abundant so- NOT happening.

Or: DON'T Explain to me what RAM is (Random Access Memory) A big vehicle for my massive luggage. The bigger the vehicle the more luggage I can carry.

ALSO: PLEASE explain to me about the coordination of the 3 combined. I am not Updating my processor - if you have any knowledge let me know if more RAM with my current one will make much of a difference. Thanks! :D
    Should I buy more RAM?
Well upgrading RAM is only one part of it. Yes upgrading to 4GB of RAM will boost you computers performance when running applications, however i would reccomd you upgrade your CPU as well.

while dual core 2.55ghz isnt bad, it certainly isnt the best for as much %26quot;multitasking%26quot; that you do. I know you said you dont want to upgrade your cpu, but its just a friendly suggestion.

But anyway, I dont know how much you are spending on RAM so i cant really give you an accurate answer. However, if you have the money go for it. Dont expect to see a MAJOR performance boost however. I had 4gb of RAM in my rig a while ago and it would still bog down a bit until i upgraded to 8gb.

WORD OF WARNING: if you are running a 32-bit operating system. Then there is no point in going over 2gb of RAM. Technically 32-bit programs will only register like 3.2gb of RAM even if you put more than that. if thats the case, then i suggest you save your money and either buy a new operating system that is 64-bit or a brand new computer.

    Anyway, good luck.
    Should I buy more RAM?
YES. if you are running multiple programs 2gb or ram wont cut it. 6 will be a lot better. the more ram you have the more workspace you have. therefore the ability to do more things at once. so yes got for it. you are making the right move
Windows XP pro 32 bit wont support more than 3.5 to 4 GB of ram.

    ~
YES , U R RIGHT , U CAN UPGRADE THE RAM TO INCREASE THE PERFORMANCE.

IF U NEED ANY TECH HELP OR SUGGESTION THEN CALL ME @ 917-832-8264 AS I PROVIDE FREE TECH SUPPORT AS A HOBBY
More ram can help, but XP pro is limited to only 4gb by design. In fact you will only be able to use 3.25 or 3.5 gb of ram even with 4gb installed, depending on your graphics card. XP will set aside ram for the graphics card and you won't be able to use it. Check properties of 'Computer' after the ram install to see what you really will be using. Also, make sure your bios is set to use dual channel because that will help a lot. If your computer is running slow you could upgrade your cpu, or clean up your computer with unwanted programs running in the background. Type msconfig in the run command and uncheck any unwanted programs to increase your performance.

What is a good desktop to buy, more details inside? Also what are the best desktop brand(s)?

I already have xp professional and windows 7, so don't care about what operating system it comes with. I also don't care if it has a large hard drive or not, but I would like it to take multiple harddrives. I know I may sound dumb with these questions, but I am so used to just using laptops, but not about taking them apart.

I only am worrying about how much ram it has and how much GHz the processor has, I don't know how to add ram or change a processor, or what things I should not do. I want it to be compatible with the largest processor(s).

Also I am looking for a desktop that isn't too costly.

I love HP/Compaq, I hear many negative things about Dell, what are your favorites?
What is a good desktop to buy, more details inside? Also what are the best desktop brand(s)?
Branding doesn't really count. If you know what you're buying, the parts are the same, they just build it together for you...

Can my computer i have right ever be as good as this one;http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell-Desktops/Dell-XPS-De?
8GB of RAM is an insane amount of memory, I don't see the necessity to uprgrade to more RAM for the next 15 years. Regarding upgrades for the computer. You can easily upgrade any component in the computer, however I do not recommend changing the motherboard or cpu unless you have the neccesary %26quot;know-how%26quot;.

  • Can you help me upgrade my PC?

I am looking to do some upgrades to my computer because I want it to perform better and I do not want to buy a new one right now. I have an HP Pavilion a1253w with an AMD Athlon 64 processor 3400+ running at 2.19 Ghz and 2.43 GB of RAM.

I am wondering how easy/feasible it is to change the processor and what would be a good replacement for what I have. I want to optimize my speed while on the internet, especially.

As for the RAM, I am already pretty certain that I could add more than I have and I am considering doing that, but my main question here is about the processor.

Also, if there is anything else that I could do in regards to hardware upgrades to increase speed and performance, please let me know.

    Thanks for any help.
Can you help me upgrade my PC?
You can probably fit a dual-core into there, though I wouldn't recommend it. You have socket 939, and due to limited supply socket 939 dual-cores are way overpriced compraed to newer AM2 ones, and you have to shell out 80+ dollars for a measly 2GHz 3800 X2.

The highest clocked socket 939 duals are the 2.6GHz FX-60s, which go for over $200.

At that point you might as well change out the motherboard, processor, and RAM at once.

For $150 you can get a decent motherboard, 4GB RAM, and an Athlon X2 dual-core.

Can you help me upgrade my PC?
Your processor and, RAM are good enough that you should be able to surf the internet with no problems. Internet speed is more dependent on you internet connection speeds than your processor and, RAM. It's going to be difficult to upgrade your CPU without changing the motherboard and, RAM as well. It would probably be easier to buy a new computer. You might could use some more RAM but, again 2.43gb should be plenty to surf the web with no problems. Go to http://crucial.com/ Scan your computer with their tool. It will tell you what you have and, suggest upgrades.

If your using dial up switch to high speed wireless, DSL or, Cable to improve your internet speeds. If you already have wireless, DSL or, Cable. Check with your provider on ways to increase speed.

How can I run World at War 5 on my laptop more quickly?

My son received World at War 5 for PC on Christmas Day. He has recently bought a Dell Inspiron laptop with a 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 4Gb of RAM, an integrated graphics card GMA X3100 and a hard drive of 320 Gb. The laptop meets the game's system requirements as far as I can tell except for the processor speed, which it says should be 3GHz or better. Is there any way I can adjust the laptop or game so that it can run (it jerks so slowly as to be unusable)? If not, is it feasible to change the processor inside the laptop without it costing the earth?
How can I run World at War 5 on my laptop more quickly?
while in game you can go to settings, video, and lower the settings, which will ultimately make the game run better, play with the settings and you'll find a reasonable one. For me, looking at your specs, its not able to run High settings very well so i'd go with medium or low so your able to run through the game without any lag at all. Down below is an answer to your second question, you can OverClock a cpu so the speed is faster and can handle more, but be worned, this is modding it and by increasing speed you increase heat and the chance of your laptop failing, good tip, its safe to go .2 Ghz, anything above that increase gets risky
How can I run World at War 5 on my laptop more quickly?
take that game and chuck it away....

ive heard that game is highly addicting

    Hello everyone,

I am not a really good person, in this area, but I have this problem, I managed to install Empire Total War, ad run it, that was not a problem, although is low resolution, but is on the windows system on my mac. However, I do not meet one of the requirements that is the processor, the processor, which is asked it 2.4, but my is 2.0, I have all the other options, so, is there a way, which i can improve the smoothly game play, because I cannot change my processor, so is there away that I can do it... for example to buy a better ram, or to install the windows 7 on my mac something like that? Would that make it better?

How Good is this Computer for playing Sims 3?

ok well I would like to know how good this computer is for playing the sims 3 and I am really not sure. I am planning to change some things and I will state them after the Link for the computer.

    Ok here is the link

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shoppi鈥?/a>

    I would Like to change the processor to a AMD Athlon(TM) II 240 dual-core processor [2.8GHz, 2MB L2, up to 4000MT/s bus]

The Graphics card to a 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4350 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter]

and the Networking card to a Wireless-G LAN card

otherwise I would like to keep everything else the same.So would this be a good computer to play the sims 3 on or not.
How Good is this Computer for playing Sims 3?
Should be fine. The VRAM is plenty and the rest should easily suffice for playing The Sims 3, since it's not an overly intensive game by any means.

Does my motherboard supports the Intel core 2 quad?

    I have a hp pavilion s3260in PC.

It has an ASUS IPILP-AR motherboard.

    Motherboard chipset: Intel i945G.

I am using an Intel Core 2 duo e4500 processor.

I want to change my processor to intel core 2 quad.

Does my motherboard support the intel core 2 quad processor?

Or will i have to buy a new mother board? if yes then please tell me some cheap compatible motheroard.

Also I Want to add an ATI Hd Radeon 4870 Graphics card, can i use the card on my existing motherboard.

How much power do i need to run all these components ( quad core processor, hd 4870 GPU, DVD drive, 300 GB Hitachi hard disk)

    Thanks in advance
Does my motherboard supports the Intel core 2 quad?
Since the Core 2 Duo and the Core 2 Quad are the same motherboard socket, your motherboard will support the Quad. To run all those components, the Newegg.com Power Supply Calculator (assuming you have a normal 4GB of RAM) says you would need approximately 500watts. You can easily get a 500watt power supply for rather cheap, like one of these from Newegg.com:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

Both will suit your needs well, but won't give much room for upgrades later. If you plan on Crossfiring your 4870's at some point (slightly over 700watts, want 750+), you'll need something like this one:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

    Hope this helps, good luck!

Does my motherboard supports the Intel core 2 quad?
Won't take a Quad core, max is E6700 (2.66 GHz) with Dual Core technology (Conroe core)

Can the HP system and build a total new system. You'll need a new motherboard and memory anyway.

Just because its the same socket doesn't mean it will take a Quad core, you must check the specs of the motherboard.

See source below for this motherboard.
Best way would be to goto intel's website. and click on the desired processor you want. They have a list there of the supported motherboards.
lol. pc. get a mac. only if u can afford it tho. no offense. and i kno im gonna get dogged for this. if anyone else who is a pc is reading this, no pc isnt better, but it isnt all bad. shoot, i might go back to pc just for windows 7, hehe. oh and if u dont like mac cuz theres no right-click or cuz its prettier, then thats an ignorant way to look at it. fyi, it has boot camp, which lets u use any windows program with the efficiency of a mac, and to right click, just hold ctrl and click to access other options. lol sorry SONIA. im just trying to make a point. just go to intel's site. they have a list of motherboards that are supported. :)
No, you can't use a quad core. A quad will fit the socket, LGA775, but it wouldn't have BIOS support from HP. Without the proper BIOS for it, either it won't work properly or it won't work at all.

    Supports the following processors:

Core 2 Duo E6000 series up to E6700 (2.66 GHz) with Dual Core technology (Conroe core)

Core 2 Duo E4000 series up to E4300 (1.8 GHz) with Dual Core technology (Conroe core)

Celeron D 300 series rev D-0 up to 360 (3.46 GHz) (Cedar Mill core)

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu >

Due to the size of your systems case (Slimline = slim tower), it has very limited internal space available for a graphics card. You can only use a low power, low profile graphics card, the HD 4870 won't fit. It also uses a TFX power supply that is small but long, an uncommon form factor that usually has a power rating of 300W or less, insufficient for the power requirements of an HD 4870 even if the card could fit, which it can't.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu >

Upgrade options for that form factor power supply are almost non-existant.

The only practical option you have would be to buy another case, any ATX, from miniATX to ATX that supports a microATX motherboard (yours), and transfer your systems components to the new case for the additional room you'll need for the card you want and an ATX power supply (very common size) that will meet or exceed the power requirements of the HD 4870. Another option would be to buy another system of the ATX variety that has the internal space needed for the card and also has an ATX power supply that can be easily upgraded.

Unfortunately, slim tower and all in ones have extremely limited upgrade potential.

The motherboard must have the same CPU slot, ie. AM2, otherwise you will need a new motherboard.

    Calling all computer geeks!?

im looking to change my processor, motherboard, and graphics card because my computer just can't withstand 2days video games. this is what i dream (not to actually buy) but im wondering, how much would be the cost of a dual core around 2.2 ghz with hyper threading. Remember, i need a motherboard to support this.
    Calling all computer geeks!?
The only non-XEON processor with hyper threading the presler - which is $1000 by itself:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

You do realize that Most dual core processors do NOT have Hyper Threading.

You should probably consider going with an AMD Athlon X2 - they're generally considered better for gaming anyway.
    Calling all computer geeks!?
Googling for hardware retailers would provide you with a million and one websites with this kind of information on them, such as:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/
Ummmm you lost me there. Not a computer geek =(
go to www.tigerdirect.com and search for the products you need.

The prices arent too shabby either
first if you buy a new processor like the intel core2 duo, you do not need the hyperthreading anymore. you can get a good motherboard for 200$ and the core 2 duo E6600(the best for the price/cost) costs about 400$
You might as well get a new pc.
your best bet is to just get a new tower , to be frank it would be a good investment really you will probably spend more in the long run there are alot of really good cpu's out there for a good price get one with an AMD 64 athlon x2 very good and im sure you will be happy with it you might like to check out best buy and look at there HP pavilion AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 3800+ 1.99 GHz 1.00 GB or RAM i had a Graphics card add for 90.00 a Radeon X1300 and this computer rocks for a real affordable price that is my sugestion good luck enjoy
i wouldnt recommend buying from tigerdirect.com .. they usually sell refurbished stuff

if u are into gaming, consider getting an alienware computer (now owned by dell) or an xps from dell...

or if u want a cheaper one, get a computer with an amd 64 bit processor..

amd is a gaming processor and usually fits well for gamers

    consider buying 2giga ram

    buy a new computer

dont spend more in repairing the one u have

it sound like u need a change

    go for amd 64 bit
    change your whole computer man
With Core 2 Duo there's no need for Hyperthreading as it's the same as having 2 (TWO) processors. One could be dedicated to just gaming and gaming only. How nice does that sound to ya? TigerDirect is an excellent place to buy computer parts. Yes, they sell some refurbished stuff, but not refurbished parts. Regardless, it will say if it's refurbished right next to the price, if that's the case. Remember though, if you decide on building your system, think about alternative ways to keep the inside of the case cooler with the set up you're wanting. good luck! And building is cheaper than buying pre-built!

Help 4When I try use Windows Media Player 11 to play a digital rights management (DRM)-protected media file...?

This is the information i have so far:

You cannot play back DRM-protected media or obtain new licenses

You cannot play back DRM-protected media files by using Windows Media Player 11 or obtain new licenses for content. Additionally, you may receive one of the following error messages:

The licenses for your media files are corrupted. (Error code 0xC00D2754)

Windows Media Player 11 cannot play the file because the associated license is either corrupted or not valid. (Error code 0xC00D11D6)

The license to play the packaged media is invalid

C00D277F - Secure storage protection error. Restore your licenses from a previous backup and try again

C00D277F - Secure storage protection error. Restore your licenses from a previous backup and try again

    Cause

The DRM store on the computer is not valid or is damaged in some way. Potential causes for this problem include the following: 鈥?The processor was changed.

    鈥?The motherboard was changed.

鈥?A BIOS setting was changed that affected hardware. (For example, you disabled hyperthreading.)

鈥?You moved the hard disk on which music was first downloaded from one computer to another.

鈥?An application, such as the RegClean utility, changed DRM settings in a way that caused corruption.

鈥?You performed a clean installation of the operating system.

This issue occurs because DRM systems, such as Windows Product Activation, maintain an internal hardware ID. This ID is based on the hardware configuration that existed when Windows was installed or when Windows Media Player 11 was installed. If you change the processor or other devices, the hardware ID in the DRM system does not match the new computer configuration. In this case, DRM determines that a user has tried to move protected content to another computer. This behavior can also occur if DRM detects that the DRM-protected storage in the registry has been changed to protect the integrity of the DRM licenses.

    Resolution

To reset the DRM store, follow these steps:1. Exit Windows Media Player 11.

    2. Find the DRM folder on the hard disk. By default, this folder is %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM in Microsoft Windows XP.

    3. Delete the contents of the folder.

    4. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

    http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indi鈥?/a> (http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indi鈥?/a>

    5. Follow the instructions on the Web site to update the security component of Windows Media Player 11. This procedure should enable you to obtain new licenses for media. You should also be able to reset licenses for purchased content so that you can play that content on a computer.

Note You must contact any third-party stores from which you purchased music to reset the licenses for that music. If you have copied CDs to protected Windows Media Audio files, those CDs must be copied again.

    Computer Questions?

    Okay, here goes.

    1. Can I change my processor to intel to another processor that is not intel?

    2. Can I change my video card ( by the way, how do I find out what is my video card?) ?

    3. Example, if I buy a video card brand name and the processor is another brand name, will it still work?

    4. How do I find out how much video ram I have?
    Computer Questions?
    1. No each motherboard has a specific chipset that is only compatible with certain processors.

    2. Yes, right click the desktop, then select properties, then advanced, then adapter.

    3. Yes, the video card only requires the appropriate slot or interface on the motherboard.

    4. When you go to the advanced tab in question 2 it will show how much video memory you have.
    Computer Questions?
    1. No, processors usually have different %26quot;socket%26quot; types that they fit into on motherboards.

    2. Video cards can be changed, you computer is proabably using a built-in or embedded video controller on the motherboard if it plugs into the I/O interface - the back side of the PC where the mouse and keyboard connectors are. It's a stand along card if it plugs in towards the %26quot;bottom%26quot; where expansion slots are. Video cards can be AGP, PCI or PCI express (PCIe). You'll need your computer documentation to know what type of cards it will support.

    3. Video card and processor can be separate brands, as long as the motherboard supports the video card type it should work.

    4. That's a good question - embedded (and some video cards) share system memory (RAM), I've always known how much video memory I have because of the video card I purchased (i.e. it tells you on the box) so I have never poked around to try to find out what this number is because I already know it.
Download SiSoftSandra 2008. Install and run it and it will tell you everything about what is inside your computer right down to the chipsets, bios version and will tell you everything about your video as well. Then you be informed enough about what you have so you can decide what can or can't be changed, removed or replaced.

    Desktop Processor help?
RAM is the only thing you can increase. You would have to get a new motherboard to support the CPU and up to date graphics card. Also this would be too much of an upgrade to use your windows operating system, you would have to buy another OS.
    Desktop Processor help?
LOL. Sorry man, you might as well toss that thing into the garbage. You can't upgrade that thing. Yeah, the RAM, but it will still be extremely slow. The Core 2 Duo processors are a completely different, and much more advanced, socket and will not go into that motherboard.

You will need to get a whole new computer if you want to see any performance increase. Sorry man.

  • How much would it cost to change a 1.73GHz processor to a 3GHz?

Also, i dont know how to do it myself so if you could tell me where i could go to do that.
How much would it cost to change a 1.73GHz processor to a 3GHz?
I would personally just buy a new computer. Because the new processor will have to be compatible with the motherboard you are using...which is hard to find out if it is. Also please specify if you're talking AMD processor, or IBM...and if you're talking single core, dual core, quad core. I'll be back looking for this info!

Ok, so you're wanting to get a Intel dual core, 3GHz processor. That will set you back about $200 just for the chip.

But in my opinion, since you're not really that amazing with computers, what I would do is take it to GeekSquad (at your local bestbuy) and tell them what you want done, ask how much it would cost, then if it's considerably less than a new computer, do it. Trust me, if you install the chip incorrectly, or the MotherBoard isn't compatible, you'll be in a tight situation.
How much would it cost to change a 1.73GHz processor to a 3GHz?
Usually older computers need to be replaced because the old parts are no longer usable in a new computer because they are obsolete.

Visit a computer store in your area and ask for advice. If you know the specifications of your old computer you don't need to bring it with you.
if you want better performance from a computer then you need to change more than just the processor

although saying that a dual core 1.73 processor is not slow, you got the equivalent of 3.4ghz processor in there (1.73 x 2) as there are two processing chips not one

are u finding the computer runs slow?

if so when? in general, loading stuff, playing games?

what do you use the computer for if you use for plaing games then consider a better graphics card the rest of the spec should cope quite well with most games, if its for office work and internet then the spec you have is more than adequate

you may just need to defragment the hard drive and use a registry checker (free online) to check for and rid the registry of invalid registry entrie that can slow the computer down, look at some of my previous answers in my profile there is a list of these applications that you can download for free

if you need more help or advice email me: edwardtrickett@live.co.uk
dont go to pc world for this, a small local computer shop is better, you'll need a compatible core motherboard for core processors, if yours is 1.73ghz pentium 4 or celeron you can get a 3.6ghz one without changing motherboard which is realy good.

    core processors aren't as fast as a pentium 4 3.6ghz unless it's a 2.4ghz x2 which is 4.8ghz. but these are expensive.

so I realy recommend to keep the motherboard and just get the fastest processor you can from ebay or something.

to replace the processor, switch everything off, take out the side panel from your pc, takeout the heatsink and fan takeout the processor, replace it with the new one, put the heatsink fan back on. if you think this is hard then get the local shop to do it for you.

don't forget that you must have at least 1 or 2 gigbaytes of RAM too the processor isn't everything
you cant overclock your CPU as its for a laptop pc, if u had a desktop version then you could easily overclock it to 2.4gz (maybe higher)

To upgrade a computer, you'll need a faster CPU, more RAM and a better graphics card. From what I see from your setup, everything is pretty good except for your RAM. Open up your computer and see what RAM slots are occupied. Chances are for you there are two 512MB RAM cards in there. You should be able to replace those two with 1GB of RAM for a decent price or possibly buy two 2GB of RAM for those slots. It depends how many slots you have.

go to HP support website and enter your product model, it will show up your computer specs and everything.

if it has LGA 775 cpu socket, a chance that you can updrade it to core duo. But i doubt it.You can add more RAM to your system. make it at least 2GB of RAM.
wait for the service pack 1 of windows vista before you upgrade because there are still lots of bugs to fix. but if you want to upgrade to windows vista, it is better to have a 2GB physical memory to run it smoothly. i think you have 3 memory slots, you can try to upgrade DDR2 motherboard like ASUS or GEFORCE with a cheaper price.
Hmmm... Check to see if your computer has PCI Express slots for a better graphics card. One of the best on the market right now is the GeForce 8800.

As for ram I would have at least 2 gigs of high performance ram. Like the corsair series for example.

Your processor is great, don't touch it. And make sure your power supply in the computer is high enough to sufficiently handle the new stuff you are putting in. Less power=less performance.

It also depends what type of games your playing. If your playing with the newer higher requirements games then by all means go out and %26quot;pimp: your computer. But if not then your computer can handle most anything at the moment.
to find out what type of ram you have go to http://crucial.com/systemscanner/index.aspx that will tell you what type of ram you have and how much each bank can hold. i also recomend going up to 2gb of ram as it will make your computer more vista compatible, but the best way to increase your computers performance is to put the maximum amount of ram into each bank. 2gb ram will increase your gaming performance alot.

has the pentium 4 got hyper threading technology, because iff t does it makes the computer think that there is 2 cpu's in there (like a core2 duo). i wouldnt worry about upgading your cpu its perfectly fine for games and vista.

I have Norton on my laptop and am testing Zone alarm.Any tips how i can speed up .?

It's slow starting, takes an age to switch off and move pages.I put

Norton slow down the performance of the PC. However you could try the steps in the link below to increase the performance of the PC.

Some friends reccomended Nod32 antivirus software

it doesn't slow the computer down like norton does

I believe it uses a different type of scanning

    Good luck
is norton turned off, because it is a system hog. zone alarm will also slow things down a bit.

between the two, i would go with zone alarm. based on my experience, it doesn't slow things down as much as norton.
when you find out let me know as i have the same problem
by simply uninstalling the Norton. It's just a quicksand. :) Get rid of it and continue with zone alarm it does all the work for you without killing your machine
You should get rid of Zone alarm for starters..... Next, if you have XP make sure that you have service pack 2 installed and enable your firewall. Buy a copy of Spysweeper from webroot and buy Symantec AntiVirus. I use, Symantec AntiVirus, Spysweeper and the built-in Windows firewall which equales no problems for me in a year and a half. Here is a tip that might help you out:

To configure XP services click start/settings/control panel/administrative tools/services. Once you have clicked it open you will see headings for the serives such as: name, description, status, startup type and login as. click the status heading to sort by which services are started. Using that as a starting point you can use the following information to help you eliminate services that you don't really need. To enable/disable; stop or start a service simply right click it and then click properties in the resulting pull down menu. After tweeking you may have to restart your computer to have to initate the changes you make. This sort of tweeking can cause crashes and such, so keep track of what you do.

Bear in mind that every machine is different. That being said here is a picture of services that most folks can live without and then there is a a picture of se rives that most folks can not live without. You may need to adjust the window size of your browser to see these pictures clearly.

Here is a summary of services Gordon Nelson gleaned from the Eldergeek Services guide. The Elder Geek recommends that this list of services be turn off or set to manual:

    Overclocking Question?

I have a Intel Pentium D (Pentium D 820) running at 2.80Ghz , i wanted to know if i could overclock it safely to 3.0 GHz with out any changes (like getting a new fan and heat sink). I Dont want to get new hardware, can i overclock with out those?

And how do i unlock my processor, because i cant change my processor speeds.
    Overclocking Question?
Change your FSB speed slowly in 5mhz intervals. Run it up untill your desired speed or untill the system crashes. After it crashes take it back down 10-15mhz to a safe speed.
    Overclocking Question?
don't do it, you'll wear our your computer fast. the speed that its set at is the safe speed, you're just asking for trouble there..
over clocking a pc can be tricky and cuts the cpu's life in half jest keep it as is
As some body suggested, try in the intervels of 5 MHz and increase your FSB and try your luck. But personally I won't do it, because, I feel, Intel guys are clever, and already the processors are over clocked. and the processors are hot cake(Dosa Tawa)
DO NOT DO IT i did it and in a year my computer was fryed and it was a new nice computer i wasted 500$ on it
    Answer #1 Is correct
The problem with overclokcing your processor is the extra heat that it produces.. Most people if they do overclock the processor doesn't give a thought to this. This is a big mistake on their part. Some of the newer computers coming out now with the liquid cooling system come from the factory overclocked. I wouldn't suggest overclocking the computer unless you are ready to overhaul your cooling system, bigger fan, if not mulitiple fans in the case, You can overclock a computer and it last you just must make sure the processor does not get too hot.
