Fast computer went slow, how can i make it fast again?

it was already fast. just for computing. not about running fast internet connection or anything. it has windows xp. 512 memory. fast processor forgot exactly which. 3 4 or whatever was good last year anyway it was working fine. i think a virus got it? i tried a restore, didnt help. tried the defragment. didnt work. changed some settings for best performance. i know about computers. i can open up computers and know what everything is but never came across this problem before. im not sure if adding more memory could fix the problem unless the memory it has is somehow no good? do i need to change out the processor maybe with a new one? it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up now, and before it decided to become slow, it was already up and running after i pushed the on button. anyone know? fast computer went slow. verrrry slow. thanks

you might have some sort of spyware or a virus. try running anti-spyware programs and im sure you will find a lotta stuff. What I would do is back everything on a dvd or a ext hard drive and format the computer, that would save you a lot of time.

Delete everything you don't need. And use the defrag thing.
Get some more RAM - always get 1GB of you can afford it.

Try this before you start spending money on any hardware other than RAM

Dephrag it!

Start%26gt;accesories%26gt;system tools%26gt;Disk Dephragmenter
Without beinbg able to inspect it, I would suspect either malware or a hardware problem.

Check to be sure all the fans are spinning at full speed.

Make sure none of the BIOS settings were changed.

Run your Antivirus and Antispyware scans in Safe Mode.

Many times the scans are ineffective in normal mode.
Viruses/Spyware could be problematic. Use a good scanner, like McAfee, to flush it all out.
sounds like you have a virus or have a lot of applications running at the same time....if there is a lot of icons on the bottom right side of your computer then I would get rid of them so they are not running in the background....just click start then run and type msconfig then go to the startup tab and check all the programs you recognize. then restart your computer. IUf this doesnt help then I would try reformatting your hardrive.
Add more memory, and if this dosen't work download something like AVG Free Editon and scan for viruses and spyware. Also, try removing some startup entires to speed up the computer during starting.
Kaspersky .antivirus

AD-aware - personal

avg antispyware

spybot search and destory

anitspyware blocker

A-squared

spyware doctor

xoftspy

you download them . then you run 1 at a time to scan ur pc . use deep scan with them all .when found spyware or addware .malware .trojan in da scan . just hit on delete.also have registry machanic . that will clean up ur pc registry you want to use a good anitivurs .. Kaspersky .antivirus is verry good .when you have scan ur pc .and remove da malware . then start pc in safemode and scan da pc again as in safe mode it will do a even more deep scan for spyware or malware or trojans you will not need to format da pc at all you can remove any spyware or trojan malware in da way i told you how to it is easy

You could talk to a tech right now at http://www.geeksquad.com and click on contact us then on chat

You can also do the same at http://www.hp-at-home.com

You could add more memory (It may help)

Go to http://www.filehippo.com and there is alot of things that can help speed up your computer. They have free anti-virus programs and spy/adware too.

Go to Start%26gt;Control Panel%26gt;Add/Remove Programs and delete the ones you are not needing or wanting.

Go to Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt;Accessories%26gt;System Tools%26gt;Defragment and Disc Clean-up

Go to the top of this screen%26gt;Tools%26gt;Internet Options%26gt;Delete cookies, files and history

Maybe you should just buy a new computer or take your computer to a PC shop.

Hope you get it fixed cause i know how aggravating it is to have a computer to be messed up.
If you download a lot of things then your computer will probably go slow. Try cleaning out your computer of things you don't need.
You can use a few bits of software to sort this out:

1. Ad-Aware - Install this and run a full system scan, you will be amazed by the amount of crap it finds! (http://www.adaware-antispyware.com/uk_ad…

2. AVG Anti-Virus - Use this, it is better than Norton and any of the virus softwares you pay for, this one is FREE! (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-vir…

3. Crap Cleaner - Simply deletes crap like internet history and cookies and frees up loads of space. (http://www.ccleaner.com/)

Hope this helps!
Did you try checking if there's some SpyWare on it?? Sometimes that can slow down a computer. I took my computer in for repair once and that's what caused all of my problems. I used a combination of Anti-Virus software and Ad-Aware. I also use PC Optimize from pcpitstop.com, they have a program which checks what could be slowing down your program and lets you know how to fix it.
defragment it
try running an anti virus program, I use AVG free and see if there is a virus. you should get a ant- spyware also. I use Adaware from Lavasoft.com
all these answers not one mentions a service at startup..

start menu - run, type 'msconfig' look at the startup tab - you may recognize some - use a search engine to figure out the rest.

uncheck what is not needed then run a program that will clean up dead ends in the registry - I have been using Registry Mechanic with excellent results.
do a disk clean up - start%26gt;all programs%26gt;accessories%26gt;disk clean up

the clean out the start-up - start%26gt;run%26gt;%26quot;msconfig%26quot;%26gt;start up uncheck all unessesary items things like realplayer AOL Quicktime

make sure you leave your firewall and anti-virus checked

click apply%26gt;ok%26gt; then reboot
simple answer

1. backup all data

2. delete all partions on all hardrives

3. reset bios to default

4. change your boot preferences in advanced bios features so the your cd/dvd drive is the first boot source

5. load a new copy of windows

6. restore all antivirus programs

7. load the rest of the other stuff that you had but make sure to quarentine it first
First, run %26quot;msconfig%26quot; and click on %26quot;start up%26quot; then unchecked everything that is not really necessary (keep the firewall and anti-virus software-off course!) Restart the computer and notice if it starts up any faster.

If your computer still has a memory slot available and can accept more memory, then 1GB definitely help.

Remember do not let any program other than firewall and anti-virus runs in the background, because it will use system memory and processor power, therefore slowing down the computer.

Kaspersky anti-virus is the best. You can go to Kaspersky.com to down load a trail version good for 30 days (or you can use their on-line scanner) For a firewall, Zone Arlam is wonderful.
Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html
