What kind of hardware upgrades can you do on a laptop?

Are there specific things you can and can't change like the processor, graphics card etc. Can you do it yourself if so how difficult is it? How much would it cost to find a professional?
What kind of hardware upgrades can you do on a laptop?
upgrades for a laptop are the same as for a desktop, find a webpage that sells comp parts(below) and install them your self, or go to a local computer repair shop, generall labor for that will range from 50-100 an hour
What kind of hardware upgrades can you do on a laptop?
better optical drive ... faster harddrive ... and more memory is about it on 99% of them .. very few allow graphics upgrade ... and even if the graphics are upgradeable or u wanted to upgrade processor u would best send it in to get it done coz taking a laptop shell apart aint no joke ... and its prolly actually better to buy a new laptop configured how u want it in the first place ...
Dze is right and...oh well....u can upgrade your mouse as well!
On a laptop the only hardware you can add is the RAM also known as memory... which can be described as a working space/// so the bigger the RAM memory the more working space you have... i would recommend a 1gigabyte ram or 512...if you want to run windows vista 1gigabyte would be recommended. The RAM of a 512 will cost from 50~100 dollars and a 1gigabyte will cost from 80~120....it is difficult so i think you will need a professionals help...some laptops have on one slot for a RAM or two slot depending on the model.... hope this helped

Can a computer processor be changed?

Hello, I have a laptop that came with an Intel (R) Celeron Processor. Thus, my laptop's becoming old as new programs and application require the computer to be more advanced in order to run them. This is the case of Adobe Flash Player 9. I can't view %26quot;interactives%26quot; through the internet because when I try to install AFP 9, an error occurs. I checked the System Requirements and the program requires the system to have at least an Intel Pentium 2 Processor.

So, can the processor in my laptop be changed? If so, how much does a processor + installation (if I can't do it myself) cost? Would it be a better idea to buy a new computer? If it IS a better idea, then laptops/notebooks recommended? I DO want a new computer, but my parents don't like the idea very much. I would like a fast computer, though I don't need a lot of Hard Drive (30-50 GB is okay).

Thank you very much
Can a computer processor be changed?
you can and if you contact me i can give you parts for a system upgrade. however more than likly since its Intel there is a slim chance it will get a big power boost from a prosessor swap i can however off an update package that will swap everything on the insides and make it primaraly a new computer.

  • Upgrading a older computer?

I have an old Dell Latitude LM166ST that I would love to upgrade. Is it possible to change the processor? Can I change the CD-ROM drive to a rewritable one? If so, how do I and where would I get the parts.
    Upgrading a older computer?
You can, but its usually less expensive to get a new one-than to upgrade an old one.
    Upgrading a older computer?
IT's a laptop and from dell so the upgrade is basically impossible. YOu can add more ram, hard drive and a try to go on dell's site to look for the Rewritable one. That's all about you can do with the laptop.
depending on how old it is depends on if you can get a cpu and heat sink for it and for the cdrw yes you can
I bought an old laptop and was never really happy with it. The biggest problem is it was basically out of date. As the person above says, you are probably better buying a new one. My experience was the batteries were worn out, the processor was inadequate, the memory was insufficient, and the windows was 95. I think I did actually ask the local agents about upgrading it and they said the only realistic option was to increase the memory to X amount, which I did.

I think it would be fun to do some of the upgrades yourself, but don't expect to turn it into the latest Compaq or Lenovo.

How do you change a document to Microsoft Works Word Processor?

My resume is saved under Microsoft Word and I can't edit it because my home computer only has Microsoft Works Word Processor.

Ps. I'm not planning to buy Microsoft Word.
How do you change a document to Microsoft Works Word Processor?
if you have time to do it somewhere else, you need to save it in another format. here's how you do it-open it and go to save it-there will be a drop down list of file types to save it as, chose rich text format (.rtf). this makes it universal to any computer. then it will work at home.

p.s. in the future, its best for you to save all documents in rich text format, it saves A LOT of hassle.
How do you change a document to Microsoft Works Word Processor?
How dose Work sucks serendip...? You're a babbeling dikshit

    Try using open office.

Its a free product just like linux. It will allow you to edit your documents and save it in format recognisable by MS word.

    Search Internet for more information.
you can change it but the formatting will be off. you can right click it and slect open with. it will convert it, but won't always convert it back. Works sucks!!!
Open your document again in MS Word then use the Save as option then under Save As Type select Works
i'm sorry, but i don't know how to convert different word processors
From your work computer, open up your resume, then:

    Click File

    Save As

In the last drop down near the bottom, Save as Type, scroll through the list until you see MS Works. Choose the version that is installed on your home computer, then email to yourself, or put it on a removable memory, go home, and have fun!
Open our resume in Microsoft Word and do File/Save As... in the file type option, choose Microsoft Works (.wps).

What version of Microsoft Works do you have? Works 7.0 can open Word 6.0/95 and Word 97/2002 files directly.
Well you can do one thing, you can use somebody else MS-Word for opening it, after that you save it in RTF format, and after that you can open with Microsoft Works Word Processor at home.

I want to upgrade my laptop how is this possible.?

i am having an hcl model ky21 laptop with a pentium dual core processor i dont want to change my processor but i want to change my graphic card my budget is 4000 i am new in computer using so plz help me someone.
I want to upgrade my laptop how is this possible.?
Mostly you can't upgrade the hardware of your laptop, as far as I know. Only PCs are upgradable.

    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000鈥?/a>

you can buy a pretty good lap top with the budget you have.

Go for a Lenovo or a Viao. they're the best.

I want to upgrade my laptop how is this possible.?
You can't upgrade a Laptop unless you're just installing some more RAM. You'll have to buy a new laptop altogether. You can get quite a good one for $4000, plenty of powerful ones for that money, so don't worry. Or you could use it to build a desktop/upgrade your desktop computer.
yeah,i can help u but you must increase your budget to 1000 more.

pls tell me you r from which city.you must contact your costmer care or u have to just go to any comp. shop and just tell him to give you *** MB graphics card of ky21 laptop. or simply tell him to give a new motherboard which support dual core.you've better option to buy a graphics card rather than a new motherboard.

I have windows vista basic and a celeron M processor i want to change the speed from 1.6 ghz to 2ghz how do I?

I know the cpu and cooling units can handle this. I cant find the option in the BIOS
I have windows vista basic and a celeron M processor i want to change the speed from 1.6 ghz to 2ghz how do I?
most likely your locked out.........you can get in to the bios, but i dont count on doing any oc'ing........dell,hp keep people out cause they think there gonna mess something up.........your best bet is to get a new cpu, if the board supports it, or speed it up w/more ram.....ya dont mention how much ya got, but to run vista you need 2 gigs minimum........see if ya can upgrade that.........good luck..........

I have windows vista basic and a celeron M processor i want to change the speed from 1.6 ghz to 2ghz how do I?
It really depends on the motherboard, some motherboard manufactures allow you to overclock your machine. However if you've bought your Laptop from a major manufacture such as Dell or HP the chances are you aren't going to be able to over clock your laptop. Your only other solution is to buy a new Processor.
It would be in CPU voltage or frequency or something

Unless you get it from a company, which they lock it so you cant change the settings (warranty issues i think)
if you are looking for overclocking laptop. Please do not try. its risky. cause the cooling method is too low for laptops to hold. its not like desktop.

for your nfo. For intel based system you cannot overclock. that option is sealed by INTEL not by AMD.

    eBRo
if possible it would be in the bios but i wouldnt sugest it because u can burn out ur proccesore and mother board
Overclocking is not a simple matter. Pick up some copies of a magazine called CPU (Computer Power User). They do overclocking all the time and you can see what all they go through to succeed. Most of the time it's simply not worth it. You risk blowing your cpu or power supply and other components. Computer speed and power improve so fast that by the time you buy the fastest computer and overclock it, a new, faster one comes out.

Depending upon what hardware you have in your computer, you'd do better and see a much greater speed increase by replacing some components with faster and better units. By replacing your hard disk with a 10,000 rpm scsi disk, and assuming that you are basically application bound instead of computational bound, you'd see a 200% to 300% improvement in the speed that your applications run compared to only about a 5% increase in 'computational' speed by overclocking. That 5% will NOT show up as a faster computer at all, if you have a slow hard disk.

    Changing to Dual Core?

So at the moment, my PC is a 3GHZ Pentium 4 Processor.

I was thinking of changing to a Dual Core soon.

I'd like to know, beforehand, if I should or not? Or of my PC could handle it?

My motherboard is a Asus P4P800-E deluxe.

3GB Ram. Using 34 Bit Vista.

I'd also like to know problems that may proceed, and if anyone could link a video on how to change the processor that would help a lot.

    Thanks.
    Changing to Dual Core?
i would say leave it, the problems that you might face, and the fact you would have to buy a new board, dosent really bring any benefits to you.

    buy a new system instead
    Changing to Dual Core?
you can't handle it, your motherboard only has a socket that supports single core so you need a new motherboard
Your motherboard does not support it, you would need a new motherboard which also means new Processor, new memory, new video card, and probably new power supply.

Its basically a new computer. Not worth upgrading.
Sorry, You cannot change the processor on that certain motherboard. However, since you are wanting a Dual Core processor, why not look in the market for a Hyperthreaded Single Core CPU. Those are close to a Dual Core as you can get.

Plus, the cost of a HT Single core is very inexpensive. You can vitalize with that motherboard a 3.2Ghz Hyperthreaded Processor. What that means, is that the Hyperthreaded will mimic a 2nd processor (like cloning). Close to 2 cores for your motherboard as you can get.
    Hello James:

Your Asus P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard came equipped with an Intel based 478 socket (478 pins) to contain you Pentium 4 processor which is in fact a single core unit that is capable of hyperthreading.

As such you are not able to install the later dual core Pentium D processors or the Core 2 Duo (C2D) units as these require the LGA 775 socket.

However, if you are looking to upgrade your computer you could replace your present 3.0 GHz cpu with a faster 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 cpu that has 1mb of cache with a 800MHz rated FSB.

You can review this cpu at the following website:

(copy and paste the string into your browser's address bar)

Here also is a list of the recommended cpu's from Asus:

Here are some youtube videos on how to replace your cpu:

Here also is a link to your motherboard's manual so you can review all the specifications.

Lastly consider overclocking your processor and ram to gain some added performance.

Check out this video on overclocking. It's not for your cpu and motherboard but it will explain the fundamentals of what can be done.
