Norton slow down the performance of the PC. However you could try the steps in the link below to increase the performance of the PC.

Some friends reccomended Nod32 antivirus software

it doesn't slow the computer down like norton does

I believe it uses a different type of scanning

Good luck
is norton turned off, because it is a system hog. zone alarm will also slow things down a bit.

between the two, i would go with zone alarm. based on my experience, it doesn't slow things down as much as norton.
when you find out let me know as i have the same problem
by simply uninstalling the Norton. It's just a quicksand. :) Get rid of it and continue with zone alarm it does all the work for you without killing your machine
You should get rid of Zone alarm for starters..... Next, if you have XP make sure that you have service pack 2 installed and enable your firewall. Buy a copy of Spysweeper from webroot and buy Symantec AntiVirus. I use, Symantec AntiVirus, Spysweeper and the built-in Windows firewall which equales no problems for me in a year and a half. Here is a tip that might help you out:

To configure XP services click start/settings/control panel/administrative tools/services. Once you have clicked it open you will see headings for the serives such as: name, description, status, startup type and login as. click the status heading to sort by which services are started. Using that as a starting point you can use the following information to help you eliminate services that you don't really need. To enable/disable; stop or start a service simply right click it and then click properties in the resulting pull down menu. After tweeking you may have to restart your computer to have to initate the changes you make. This sort of tweeking can cause crashes and such, so keep track of what you do.

Bear in mind that every machine is different. That being said here is a picture of services that most folks can live without and then there is a a picture of se rives that most folks can not live without. You may need to adjust the window size of your browser to see these pictures clearly.
