Is it possible to change just processor only?

at present my processor is amd athlon 3000+ and speed is 2.17 ghz. motherboard is asus a7v600-f.

is it possible to put in a 2.30 or 2.40 ghz processor? how much will it cost in 拢? is it easy to fit?
Is it possible to change just processor only?
The short answer is yes. It looks like you should be able to get an Athlon XP 3200+ running at 2.3 Ghz. It's a slightly older processor so finding it new may be difficult. You're best bet to find one would be to get a used unit. They tend to run anywhere between 10-33拢.

If your you're looking to maximize performance you might want to start with RAM first. If you have a windows machine right click on my computer and go to properties. If you have less that roughly 3GB of RAM, I would start with that. It's an easier install and it's performance benefit is greater.

edit: Given a choice between the two I would suggest getting a memory upgrade over a new processor. The speed difference between a 3000+ and a 3200+ will most likely be too small to really notice. If I was to venture a guess I imagine you probably have 2 sticks of 1 GB memory installed. It should have 3 bays so you should be able to install 1 more to increase total capacity. This being said... memory is more simple to install but can be far more difficult to get to work properly than a processor. Essentially all of the modules of memory need to be compatible to function properly.

It depends on the socket. Because it's an Athlon I'm guessing that the Processor is smoldered to the motherboard. If you can give your computer to a shop and tell them to replace the mobo and processor, try that. Your processor may not be smoldered, check that too. Also the socket on your motherboard is very old so it would be hard to upgrade past what you have now. A new mobo is the best idea.
As long as the sockets are the same, you can put the processor in. Going from 2.17 to 2.4 you won't notice much of a difference at all. Spend a bit of money on a better heatsink and you can overclock it to that.
A mobo is a short term for motherboard.

A heatsink is the fan that is placed over the CPU (Central Processing Unit) to stop it from overheating.

Overclocking is pushing the CPU to higher limits, or a higher Ghz, but also damaging it and lowering its life.

To answer your original question, yes, you can replace a processor with a higher speed. But the processor will have to be able to be compatible with the motherboard.

2.3 or 2.4 ghz isn't that much of a difference in speed to a 2.17. You won't feel that much of a difference if you change anyways. So seriously, there's no need to go through the trouble. When comparing the speed of a 2.3 to a 2.17, it's only a few seconds faster. Not that much of a difference.

To sum it all up: Don't switch processors. It's not worth the money.
yes you look for the type socket sounds like you have a 478 socket its very easy to replace overclock is increase the speed of the processor but since it not designed to run that fast you take a chance on frying it little is more 2.4 I can give you one I have a couple 2.4 lying around somewhere I think one might be fryed just e-mail me look at the mother board specs it will tell you how fast your board will support
