I am not sure what makes you think that is much better, it isn't. If you want to upgrade, save yourself some where between 400-700 dollars and buy a whole new system. It depends on what you want to do with it though as to how much you need to spend.

if u want to up grade your proccesor you can upgrade your ptoccesor with amd athlon (x3,5200) but you have nice configuration of pc.
find some info about the computer you have probably can be found from Compaq's site you might need to upgrade the bios for it to work but the chances are you will have to buy a new Motherboard if you want anything higher than a AMD athlon 64x2 which is a dual core
Your computer should come with a manual that tells you your motherboard. Also should tell you in the manual without looking at the specs on internet what it can handle eg maximum of 4 gb ram at 800 mhz on front two slots for ram but 4 GB ram at 666 MHz on back two . Althought your after cpu i was just using an example.

Besides seeing that you have an AMD cpu im assuming you would also have an AMD motherboard so you should probably be able to run just about any AMD dual core. But thats only the case with some motherboards so your going to have to find out what motherboard you have. Anyway if you have no manual you can use this program to find out its what i use.http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.h鈥?/a>
Using that CPU your Motherboard supports 754 soccet

in which case to get performance suitable for modern applications id recommend a new Motherboard and CPU id reccomed getting an intel based board because you get more value for money.

The performance is not entirely based on the clock speed eg 2.20 ghz

you should also look towards the FSB rate this determines its data transfer rate with the ram, a high clock speed coupled with a high FSB will tell you the best CPU.

The best CPU you can get with your current motherboard is the AMD athlon 3700+ its a 2.4GHZ FSB:unknown
