What information do I need to change out a processor?

How do I know a new processor is compatable with my computer? What are the features I should look for when switching them out? Also do I need a new fan? I have an intel celeron 2.4 ghzin a dell gx60 small form factor computer?

Your Dell Optiplex GX60 uses an 845-chipset motherboard with a Socket-478 CPU.

Since it's a small-form-factor chassis, heat dissipation is not as efficient as a normal tower case. Your Celeron is probably the best CPU for it.

If you want to upgrade, you might try a Northwood-core Pentium-4, which are also socket-478 CPUs.

I would not recommend a Prescott-core Pentium-4, because those things generate A LOT of heat. 120 watts of it. (compared to 80 watts for a Northwood and 60 watts for your Celeron). Put a PresHott into that tiny case, and you are running a very real risk of overheating that computer.

It's probably more economical for you to get a new machine rather than upgrade that GX60 IMHO.

look for socket 478 processors.

google your mobo and see what it supports..
Find out your mother board's model number and search for it. From there read up on how big of a CPU it supports and what socket your CPU is.
this is a very difficult process

its best just to get a motherboard that comes with a processor built in because you dont know if your motherboard will be compatible with the processor you put in...check the internet for this for your motherboard provider

if you want to swap it out you have to take the old one out install the cpu lift the socket lever, align the cpu pins properly, gently drop the cpu in(don't force it, it should be easy), then latch the lever down, apply a small amount of thermal material(like artic silver 5), then mount the heatsink.

Make sure you don't have any bent cpu pins from trying to put it in incorrectly. If you do, try to carefully bend them back in place.
Check what range of processors dose your motherboard support. I know it uses socket 478 that means you can install P4 or Celeron. But still you must check what speeds you can get. I would go for the Celeron since your motherboard uses one so check Celeron D 350 and if you can install it on your motherboard. Good luck
