How do i change my pc to a 64 bit form a 32 bit?

I have a 32 bit PC and i would like it to be a 64bit. the pc was built with 64 bit so i was wondering how i can change the pc to run as a 64 bit. do i need to change the processor?...if i do shall i get a 64 bit processor and install it by taking the 32 bit processor out. if not what do i need to change to change my system to a 64 bit.

thanks

Check whether you already have a 64 bit CPU in your pc, if it was built stating it was 64 bit then the cpu usually is a 64 bit processor.

You will then only need to install 64 bit operating system software.

You might need to put some more RAM in though.

If you have a 64 bit processor, you can run a 64 bit version of windows.

To find out if you have a 64 bit processor go to here: http://to./487a and click

%26quot;How do I tell if my computer can run a 64-bit version of Windows?%26quot;

Once you have done that, to use a 64 bit version of windows you'll need to install it from a disc. If you need to buy a disc with a 64 bit version of windows, just go to a computer shop and ask them.
What CPU have you got in there at present.

If it was as you say built 64-bit all you should need is a 64-bit operating system like Windows Vista/7 64-bit edition, which you will need to buy.

If it's only a 32-bit processor though you will need to replace the CPU and possibly the motherboard as well as Windows to make it run 64-bit. Check your motherboard manual to see which CPU's it supports, and if it support 64-bit CPU's then you should just need a CPU upgrade (if the CPU isn't 64-bit already).

You could already have a 64-bit CPU in there though if it was built for 64 bit e.g. if it's an AMD64 then it is 64 bit and just needs the OS (or some of the Intel's - Intels are a bit funny 'cos they didn't mark theres up 64-bit like AMD did so some are 64-bit some are 32-bit and you need the CPU number to tell which one it is!)
hi tufail

first of all you need to discover if your cpu has 64bit support and the quick and easiest method of discovering this is to download the program %26quot;cpu-z%26quot; from http://www.filehippo.com/download_cpuz/

then run the program which will show if your cpu has 64bit support... with this confirmed you then need to purchase a 64bit version of windows... some of the latest versions (windows 7,vista) come with both 32bit and 64bit disks when you buy them... and then you need to reinstall windows using the 64bit disk...( some disks have 32bit and 64bit on the same disk and you simply choose the appropriate version when prompted... note : 32bit will appear as x86...)

amd athlons supported 64bit much earlier than intel cpu,s... for example the athlon64,s ( around 6 years old ) support 64bit and these can be snapped up for under 拢20 ...

another thing about 64bit operating systems is the compatibility... when 64bit was initially released there were not many programs that supported 64bit however over the last few years 64bit has become much more stable

finally and most important the main reason for using 64bit windows is the memory support... 32bit operating systems can only recognize up to 3.5gb of ram(sometimes only 3gb) however 64bit windows can support over 4gb and windows 7 can actually support up to 192gb of ram .....(xp around 32gb ) .... and this is the main reason why most end users upgrade to 64bit....

i hope this has helped, any problems let me know

good luck tufail !
It depends on what processor you actually have..

The processor will need to be:

- If it is AMD: AMD64 compatible CPU

- If it is Intel: The lowest CPU that I know will work is a Pentium D or better

Assuming you have the right CPU, what you will need to do is back up a copy of all your documents and programs (make you you unregister them first). You will need to do a clean install of your operating system. What this does is wipe absolutely EVERYTHING off your hard drive. You will need to do a %26quot;Clean Install%26quot; of your operating system which I am assuming is Microsoft Windows.. :)

To install Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, you will need to have the disk that you know has a 64-bit copy of Windows on it. You may have to buy it.

I highly recommend Windows 7- I have used it myself and have found no faults.

You can not %26quot;just change%26quot; the OS, because it runs totally different.

So in summary, you need to do a format/clean install. It is the only way.
